Draft — not verified by a human. This table has not been checked against the live regulations, and seasons change in-season by emergency rule. Drafted from WDFW sport fishing rules, digital edition of 18 Jun 2026, Marine Area 12. Confirm with WDFW before you fish. Do not rely on it.

Season detail, rules and deadlines

4
no min. size
Four fish — double the Puget Sound norm. Release Chinook, chum and sockeye through Oct 15; from Oct 16 release Chinook only; from Nov 1 release Chinook and coho. Three different release rules in three months.
Salmon, south of Ayock PointOpenJul 1 – Sept 30,

steps to Nov 30
4
Chinook min. 20″
Chinook may be kept south of Ayock Point at 20″ or over through Sept 30 — where the north half releases them. Oct 1 – 15 release Chinook and chum; Oct 16 – 31 release Chinook; Nov 1 – 30 release Chinook and coho.
Hoodsport Hatchery ZoneOpenJul 1 – Nov 304Night closure applies through every period. The zone follows the south-of-Ayock release rules.
Skokomish mouthOpenJul 1 – Sept 304Fishing from a floating device only — no bank fishing. Same limits and release rules as south of Ayock Point.
Tarboo BayClosedAug 1 – Sept 15 only4
no min. size
The short Tarboo Bay season ended Sept 15. Release Chinook, chum and sockeye when open. Closed Sept 16 – Nov 30.
Pacific halibutClosedClosed all yearClosed to fishing for, retaining or possessing in Area 12. Halibut is open in every other area on this site, which is exactly how people get it wrong here.
LingcodClosedClosed all yearNo May–June season in Area 12. The statewide May 1 – June 15 lingcod season does not apply to Hood Canal.
CabezonClosedClosed all yearClosed here, where it is open May 1 – Nov 30 everywhere else on this site.
RockfishClosedClosed all yearClosed to fishing for, retaining or possessing. Carry a descending device.
Dungeness crabClosedJul 2 – Sept 7
Thu–Mon (summer, ended)
5 males
min. 6¼″
Males only, minimum 6.25″; release soft-shell, females and undersized. Retain the back shell in the field. Hood Canal is split at Ayock Point for crab as well as salmon. The winter season has not been announced.
Spot shrimpClosedSpring onlyHood Canal spot shrimp days are set each spring, area by area, and are typically a handful of days in May. Nothing open now.
Clams, oysters, musselsCheckBy beachHood Canal has some of the best public shellfish beaches in the state and a long biotoxin history. Biotoxins are not destroyed by cooking or freezing. Check the DOH map the day you dig.

Hood Canal is the odd one out, and the differences all cut against you. Halibut, lingcod and cabezon are closed here year-round while every other area on this site has a season for them. Salmon go the other way: four fish instead of two.

Ayock Point is the line that matters. North and south of it are separate fisheries with different opening dates, different Chinook rules and a separate crab season. It is roughly halfway down the canal and it is not marked on the water.

This is a convenience summary, not the regulations. Seasons move on short notice, and this table was transcribed from the published rules and has not been checked by hand. Confirm on WDFW's emergency rules page or the Fish Washington app before you leave the dock, and check shellfish on the DOH Shellfish Safety Map or the biotoxin hotline at 1-800-562-5632.

Recent WDFW notices mentioning this water. These are WDFW's own headlines — read the notice, not this summary of it.

Ramp by ramp

WDFW samplers meet boats at the ramp and count what is in them. These are the checks in Marine Area 12 over the last 45 days — fish actually counted, not fish reported. Sorted by anglers checked.

Per angler is fish divided by anglers checked at that ramp, across every check in the window — it mixes salmon, lingcod and halibut trips together, and one good weekend can carry a whole month. A ramp with few checks is a small sample, not a slow ramp. Figures come from WDFW's Puget Sound sampling summaries, which are published on WDFW's own schedule and can run a week or more behind.
